The 8ID, short for Eighth Infantry Division, is a crucial part of the Philippine Army. It is one of the country’s primary defense units and plays an essential role in maintaining peace and order within its jurisdiction. The 8ID was activated on August 1, 1988, under the command of then Brigadier General Ruperto Ambil II. Initially composed of three brigades with various support units, it has since grown to become one of the most formidable divisions in the Philippine military.
Based in Catbalogan City, Samar Province, Eastern Visayas region (Region VIII), hence its name “Storm Troopers,” this division covers six provinces: Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Western Samar (Samar), Leyte, Southern Leyte and Biliran. Its mission is to conduct sustained Internal Security Operations (ISO) to neutralize the armed threat groups and ensure a secure environment conducive for sustainable development.
The unit’s motto – “Defender Bantay Kapayapaan” – translates into English as “Defenders and Guardians of Peace.” This reflects their commitment not only to defend against external threats but also to maintain internal peace and order. The soldiers from this division are known for their bravery and dedication towards their duties.
Over time, they have been involved in several significant operations that have contributed immensely towards national security. They were instrumental during numerous encounters against insurgent groups such as New People’s Army (NPA). Their efforts resulted in numerous successful missions including seizure of enemy campsites and recovery of various firearms contributing greatly towards diminishing insurgency problems within their area.
Apart from combat operations against insurgent groups; disaster response is another major responsibility shouldered by these brave men. During times when natural calamities strike like typhoons or earthquakes; they are among the first responders providing aid relief operations ensuring safety & well-being of affected populace.
As part of their civic duty; they also actively participate in community development programs. They conduct medical and dental missions, tree planting activities, school repairs, and various socio-civic actions to help uplift the living conditions of the people within their area of responsibility.
In terms of equipment, 8ID SLOT is equipped with modern firearms, armored vehicles, artillery pieces and other military hardware necessary for its operations. The division also regularly conducts trainings to ensure that its personnel are well-prepared for any situation.
Overall, the 8ID plays a vital role in ensuring peace and order in Eastern Visayas region.
